In this episode of "In the Interim…", Dr. Scott Berry delivers a metaphoric critique of single-question trial infrastructure through the sports arena analogy, illustrating the cost, patient burden, and data inefficiency of conventional clinical trials.

Imagine building a new arena for every sports game. Costs would skyrocket and many fewer games would be played. This analogy from Dr. Scott Berry helps expose the inefficiency of traditional clinical trials: “This is exactly what we do in clinical trials.”

Running single-question trials means duplicated infrastructure, higher costs, and unnecessary patient exposure. Platform trials tackle this by using master protocols: multiple treatments, shared controls, staggered entry and exit of arms – playing multiple games in each arena. REMAP-CAP delivered rapid results during COVID-19 and ongoing efforts like HEALEY ALS and I-SPY 2 show major gains in speed, cost, and scientific rigor across diseases.
